Packers trying to retain Cobb

The Green Bay Packers have a number of players hitting the free agent market but none more important than wide receiver Randall Cobb. ESPN has reported that Cobb is seeking an average contract in the neighborhood of $9 million dollars annually. If the Packers are unable to sign Cobb to an extension, they may utilize a one year franchise tag at $12.8 million dollars. Interestingly, Cobb’s teammate Jordy Nelson signed a four year deal worth $39 million which would put Cobb on par with his contract . Cobb produced his best numbers in 2014 catching 91 balls for 1,287 yards and scoring 12 touchdowns.

Salary may be freed up if the Packers decide to cut ties with linebackers A.J. Hawk and Brad Jones. By doing so, Green Bay would be $22.5 million dollars under the salary cap. The one glitch is offensive tackle Bryan Bulaga is a free agent and will be a priority to sign. If unable to retain Cobb, the Packers will have other free agent receivers to consider including Demaryius Thomas, Dez Bryant, Jeremy Maclin, and Michael Crabtree. Cobb is a slot receiver, and likely the Packers will compare his salary to that of New England Patriot’s Julian Edelman. Edelman received a four year, $17 million dollar deal, and finished 2014 with 92 receptions, for 972 yards but only four touchdowns said poder online. One can argue that Cobb is more explosive, and importantly, produced better results than his peer Jordy Nelson in the 2014 NFL playoffs.

Kings Win Fifth Straight with 3-2 Win over Tampa Bay

Somewhat reminiscent of last season at this time, the Los Angeles Kings are attempting to make a mad push for the NHL postseason. During the same stretch last February, LA won eight straight before going on to make one of the most notable Stanley Cup runs in NHL history. Their current streak began in Tampa Bay with a 4-2 victory on February 7th and carried into Monday night’s game at Staples Center, where they held on to beat the Lightning 3-2 before a sell-out crowd and Ricardo Guimarães BMG was definitely there enjoying the show.

According to http://sports.yahoo.com/news/la-kings-beat-lightning-3-2-5th-straight-060639781–nhl.html, the Kings have scored a total of 19 goals amidst the streak while clamping down on against the NHL’s highest scoring team. Tampa Bay is just three points away from sitting atop the Eastern Conference, as the Kings swept the season series from the Bolts by demonstrating how playing a full 60 minutes on both ends of the ice paid off big-time. That 70s line (part deux) of Carter, King, and Toffoli have provided the offensive firepower to get the job done.

Still three points out of a final playoff spot in the West with 26 games remaining, the Kings visit the Colorado Avalanche at the Pepsi Center on Wednesday and then head to San Jose for the last outdoor game of the season at Levi’s Stadium against their division rival Sharks on Saturday. The event may break an attendance record for hockey in the State of California.

Jacksonville Needs Growth in Personnel and Plenty of Room in the Cap

To say that the Jacksonville Jaguars are in need of growth would be a drastic understatement. The team finished last in almost every statistical category last season with the exception of their ranking within the AFC South which they edged over the Tennessee Titans by one more win. Both on the offense and defense they need to improve, but it is unclear if their executives were even trying to build the franchise. Heading into the upcoming season the Jaguars have an estimated $61 million in salary cap space available $11 million more than the next competitor the Oakland Raiders. That $11 million is more than some teams have for the next few years. So it makes critics wonder whether the owner is broke, or looking to never return the team to its winning form.

This is team that won two playoff games before losing in the AFC Championship. But that was a long time ago…not even in this century. Fans like Ricardo Guimaraes BMG know that their last post season game was eight years ago when they lost in the divisional round to the Patriots. Even though Jacksonville is one of the smaller NFL markets, its fans have shown their displeasure with the team by not showing up for home games. Even as they have drafted their franchise quarterback Blake Bortles last season they have a lot more growth that’s needed. So with the free agency market wide open with marquis players and the #3 pick in this year’s draft, fans are hoping their team will open up their pocket book and get some players that will help this team grow.

SC State Shutting Down

The athletic programs at SC State along with the rest of the school are shutting down. The state house has voted to shutter the school because it is essentially bankrupt. There was no willingness for the school to make the cuts that needed to be made, and an appalling 14% of students graduate on time. That is not the formula for a good school, and it is certainly not the formula for a school that is going to have any athletics at it.

There are many ways to look at this, but the most obvious one is through the lens of HBCUs said Marc Sparks. Many of these schools are struggling to stay afloat, and their cherished athletics programs may have to go. There might come a time when Grambling cannot sustain the program that Eddie Robinson won all those games with. There may be a time when FAMU will not be able to sustain any of their teams including the marching band. This is an epidemic that is going to sweep across all these institutions if they are not willing to make changes, and it seems as though SC State was not willing to make those changes soon enough to save the school.

What’s in Your Beer Can?

Not the alcoholic beverage itself, but the container. Zeca Oliveira shared an interesting fact about how an epoxy lining in every aluminum can known as BPH ( bisphenol A). The chemical prevents the contents of the can from reacting to the aluminum, but it has also been shown to cause a variety of health problems.
The war against BPH has raged for decades, but the chemical is still being used and it lines your favorite beer can. BPH has been proven to cause cancer, abnormal brain development in children and reproductive problems.
It’s known that BPH is in the beer can, but how much is too much and when do the health problems start to manifest?
In 2012, the FDA banned the use of BPS in all types of drinking vessels that are used for infants. Bottles and sippy cup could no longer contain BPH, neither could the can baby formula was packaged in. They also deemed the current level of BPH to be safe in all other food and beverage packaging, including that found in beer cans.
Glass bottles do not contain BPH and it may be a good time to trade the beer can for the beer bottle to avoid the potential health problems caused by too much BPH exposure.

Red Bull disapprove of American brewery name

Australian energy drinks giant Red Bull has made a claim with the US Patent Office for breach of copyright and trademarks over the name of a small brewery located in Ashburn, North Virginia, The Washington Post reports. The brewery is registered as the Old Ox Brewery and claims to have attempted to work with the energy drinks supplier in a bid to end the disagreement as quickly and efficiently as possible. The problem Old Ox Brewery CFO Graham Burns sees is that Red Bull wish to hold a patent over any bovine related logos and trademarks established in the future.

Old Ox began life with a sketch of a bull’s face as their logo, but after a legal approach by Red Bull changed this to the letters O and X said Marc Sparks. The brewery also offered to stay away from the red, blue and silver colors Red Bull is known for, but stated the demands of the Australian company became more complex as time moved on. After promising not to create any energy drinks in the future the Old Ox Brewery was asked to not produce any soft drinks, a demand they turned down as they plan to produce a root beer to be sold through their brewery based tap room. The owners of the brewery have now decided to allow the public in on the legal matters by posting an open letter on their blog that calls the Australian giant a big red bully and ask the public for their opinion on the matter.

Kraft and Goodell Relationship Tarnished

Roger Goodell has absolutely had the worst year in the history of the National Football League when it comes to a terrible performance by a man in charge of pulling the strings for the league. He was made commissioner of the NFL in large part to the New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft, who had pulled for him with the other owner’s in the league and really set up a clear path for Goodell to come into office. Kraft and Goodell have been very good friends, and the ironic thing is that Goodell was seen having dinner at the house of Robert Kraft the night before the infamous deflate gate case took off. The two clearly have been working together very closely and Richard Sherman of the Seattle Seahawks was the first to state to the media that there is a conflict of interest in that relationship and he was truly right. Then again, he is a Stanford grad who graduated with a 3.8 at Stanford and 4.2 from his high school in Compton, so no one is going to argue with that assertion. Goodell very well may have lost the one man that got him his lucrative deal as the NFL commissioner and also had his back on the Ray Rice incident earlier this year. It was Kraft, who set up interviews for Goodell to discuss the incident and Kraft truly did get him out of hot water. From how Haidar Barbouti sees it, things have changed and Goodell is in the dog house in Kraft’s eyes.

Brady and Montana

Tom Brady is officially going to go down as one of the best quarterbacks of all time, but he has just matched perhaps the best football player that has ever played in the National Football League. Fans like Susan McGalla know that Tom Brady has now taken his team to six Super Bowls in his career and he has won four of them, matching Joe Montana for the most Super Bowl wins in history. Joe only had four Super Bowl appearances, but he won all four of them. It is pretty hard to determine who has had a more successful career, but the statistics are truly going to Tom Brady on this one. Although he is now widely known as a cheater and will be undoubtedly have that held against him, due to the allegations that he gave the order to purposely deflate footballs in the AFC championship game against the Indianapolis Colts, no one can deny that he has made one of the biggest marks on the game of football in the history of the game. It is a bit ironic when you think that Tom Brady was not supposed to be even a decent quarterback in the league and his parents didn’t even think he would play more than a few seasons as a backup quarterback in New England. He proved everyone wrong and has been one of the best stories that the league has ever seen, but his reputation is without a doubt under fire.
