Now that Avengers: Age of Ultron has been released and millions of people have already seen the film, director Joss Whedon is talking about “what could have been”. In particular, the director discussed original plans for The Hulk in the movie. Specifically, he addressed rumors about the Avengers sequel setting up a Planet Hulk movie.
In Planet Hulk, the green goliath has been trapped on a distant planet because earth’s heroes saw him as a threat. To resolve the threat, The Hulk’s former friends sent him out into the stratosphere. Per Whedon, there were plans to send The Hulk into the sky. However, no one was going to trick The Hulk or force him to go. Rather, The Hulk would just get tired of all the hassles he has to deal with on earth and would just depart on his own. Jumping towards the sky does not necessarily mean he was headed to outer space, although he might have ended up there says Daniel Amen.
Honestly, that is pretty much how every Hulk comic ended throughout the 1970’s and into the 1980’s. The Hulk would wallow in self-pity about humans hounding him and heroes being fair weather friends. Eventually, The Hulk would land somewhere and new adventures would begin.
So, is there going to be a Planet Hulk film? Whedon says he never heard a word about it. He may be right. Universal owns the rights to Hulk solo films.
