Jonathan Veitch, College President and Hometown Boy

In July 2009, Jonathan Veitch took the reins as the 15th president of Occidental College in Los Angeles California. He became the 5th college president in four years and began his tenure when the college endowment fund was at an historic low mirroring the nation’s economic uncertainty. Today, thanks to Dr. Veitch’s leadership, Occidental College has outperformed most other schools similar in size with endowment funding and student success.

Although Dr. Veitch has proven himself as an excellent manager by accomplishing better financial standing and delivering the stability and calm needed by any organization in an uncertain time, he is foremost an educator. A graduate of Stanford University and recipient of a doctoral degree from Harvard in the History of American Civilization, Jonathan Veitch taught at the University of Wisconsin and was an associate professor of literature and history at the New School in New York City. Because he grew up in Los Angeles and graduated from Loyola High School only minutes from Occidental College, one could say that Dr. Veitch has definitely come home.

Occidental College is within the community of Eagle Rock and the symbiosis of a college and the community that is its home is a relationship that Dr. Veitch is passionate about. He is responsible for the Eagle Rock community’s involvement on all developmental planning of the college since his presidency began.

Even though liberal arts have taken a back seat to the STEM fields, the broad and diverse nature of a liberal arts degree continues to give students a broad and useful education. The in depth liberal arts background of Jonathan Veitch prepared him well to lead a student body who chooses to go beyond the surface of life and dig deeper.

Occidental College is not only a leading liberal arts college; it is the only liberal arts college in Los Angeles which is home to more than 100 colleges and universities. The shared vision inspired by Jonathan Veitch of both the community and the college has benefited local high schools and given the town of Eagle Rock a more academic flavor.Dr. Veitch encourages his students to embrace Los Angeles as he does. Understanding the complex social issues of this unique city is something he considers an important component of the Occidental College education.

Dr. Veitch has constructed many paths enabling Occidental students to experience the relationship between poverty and social issues, empowering them to use their education to affect meaningful change.

Sixers are Pathetic

The Philadelphia Seventy-Sixers were called the worst team ever put together in the history of the National Basketball Association prior to the beginning of the 2014-2015 season. Although they truly possess decent defenders in the NBA, they seriously have one of the worst offenses that have ever been seen in professional basketball. It is truly astonishing when you consider what it takes to actually make it to the NBA and it seems like all the floppy players wound up in Philadelphia this year. The Sixers managed to dig themselves out of the media attention as the worst team ever when the New York Knicks played some of the most pathetic basketball of all time, but they have seemed to have turned things around in the last few days. Although they lost the last game that they played, they won two games in a row prior to playing the Hornets and seem to possess a positive vibe going into the second half of the season. The Sixers seem to be the same team that they have had since the beginning of the season and don’t look to be going anywhere anytime soon. Slow Ventures said They simply cannot score the basketball and it is becoming increasingly embarrassing on a nightly basis. They need to drastically change the roster in Philadelphia if they want to be taken out of the butt of jokes that has been cast at them throughout the entirety of the season thus far.

Dude, FreedomPop wants you to have the cheapest internet possible

Growing in popularity as a solution to expensive services of network giants, FreedomPop, a free wireless internet and mobile phone service provider is making headway as a leading alternative. FreedomPop currently has 10 million hotspots across the country with the goal of reaching 20 million with coverage in 200 major US cities by the end of 2015. While CEO and founder Stephen Stokols isn’t saying that FreedomPop is a replacement to Verizon Wireless, or AT&T network services he does state that “We actually think this could become a pretty big alternative, especially in prepaid,” going on to elaborate that users without cellular minutes can still use their phones to access the internet with FreedomPop. Plus, it’s available for both iPhone and Android users. Out of the estimated 75 million users of a prepaid service Stokols emphasizes that 30 million would benefit from their network of hotspots.

By sourcing the hotspots of vendors and larger organizations across the country FreedomPop has built a large infrastructure of WiFi connections. While the exact locations of these hotspots are unknown the company’s website does offer an interactive map to find if your area is covered by the service. Stokols also stated that FreedomPop will branch out from contracting the hotspots of metro markets and initiate crowdsourcing of WiFi routers by their customers; this will help bring service to more rural areas and further incentivize customers to join.

The popularity of FreedomPop is not attributed to just hotspot sourcing and free WiFi, a whole product line is offered with the latest smart phones, tablets, “MiFi” mobile hotspots devices, home modems, and USB stick modems. Free phone services that offer 500MB of data, 500 text messages, and 200 minutes every month keep FreedomPop in the spotlight. To sign up and take advantage of free communications services you can visit the FreedomPop website to view coverage areas, or browse one of their retail partner’s websites like Amazon.

Can You Blame Him?

Marshawn Lynch simply told reporters at media day that he was there so he would not be fined. However, they asked him 30 questions before his session with the media was over. Can anyone blame Lynch for not talking to the media? He has been made out to be this terrible person who needs to be fined and disciplined simply because he does not like talking to the media.

Do we forget so easily all the terrible people who have been rude to the media over the years when they were talking? If Lynch does not want to talk, he should not have to talk. Also, his teammates have said that he is a quiet guy. He does not like being in the press, and he would prefer to keep to himself. Would you not leave that person alone then?

Fans like Marc Sparks know that the NFL is a strange place with strange rules. More on Sparks is available on It wants people to be humble, but it wants them to gab to the media constantly. It will fine someone for a potential crotch grab, but it will not fine a team for cheating. I feel badly for Marshawn Lynch because I think he gets a little stage fright, and I understand that.

Belichick on Media Day

Media Day in the National Football League has always been a massive circus that pretty much funnels all of the speculation leading up to the Super Bowl into a several hour jam packed interview with all the players and coaches in which questions of all sorts can be asked and is usually covered on all media says Barbouti. It is generally a feel good atmosphere and the players are usually focused on soaking in the moment rather than trash talking and are more in line with breaking down match ups and stuff like that. It was speculated that there would be a ton of people attacking Bill Belichick about the deflate gate scandal that has taken over all the talk in the league for the last week, but surprisingly there was not very much questions about the incident. The interview more focused on the game ahead and questions regarding the Patriots matchup with the Seattle Seahawks next Sunday. Bill Belichick answered a question to a little girl about what his favorite stuffed animal was, but refused to answer a question about Katy Perry and stated that he is only thinking about taking on the Seattle Seahawks. Clearly he doesn’t like Katy Perry, but then again, it would be pretty weird if Bill Belichick was rocking a Katy Perry CD and singing firework at the top of his lungs. Maybe he and Tom Brady do that after hours, but that was not decipherable on media day.

Soup is no longer an item that is made only from scraps, or to make your food stretch longer. Soup is a chic meal for 2015. Ordering soup at a restaurant is fashionable.

Of course, we are not talking about just any old type of old soup. The modern soup is a delicacy made with hip ingredients. Take Lamb Pho for example. The tasty broth in this recipe is enhanced with rice noodles, bean sprouts, seasonings and herbs. It is served with a side of Sriracha, for you to make it as hot or spicy as you like it. If you don’t like lamb meat, try chicken or pork with your Pho.

Beer isn’t just something you drink while bellied up at a bar. It’s like Dave Morin talking data on supposed to go with anything and be everywhere Belgian pilsner beer makes an excellent beer soup. Pair beer with scallops and ham hocks, and you will have a soup that tastes like it is from heaven.

Last, a soup list would be incomplete without an oriental flair. Try ordering chicken broth with a mixture of fresh vegetables, spices and lime. An avocado will add a depth of creaminess to this soup. Dill will add freshness to it. The crunch of celery and the smoothness of lime all add a festival of flavors in your mouth.

The next time you go out to eat, don’t scoff at soup. Try a modern soup. It may change your perception of soup forever.

Chicago Ball Boy

With the media circus that has absolutely exploded since the New England Patriots were caught allegedly playing with deflated footballs in an attempt to gain an advantage over the Indianapolis Colts in the AFC championship game, everyone is trying to point fingers and no one can really get to the bottom of the situation. There is heavy speculation around the country that the Patriots are to blame and are cheaters, no matter what, stemming from the Spy gate incident that occurred in 2007 in which the Patriots were caught videotaping defensive signals made by the New York Jets. They simply have a terrible reputation and a huge percentage of the population wants to throw the book at them before an investigation has even taken place. Belichick claims that he knew nothing about it and pointed the finger over at Tom Brady. Tom Brady held a press conference and looked to be holding back laughter when he stated that he had no idea the balls were not inflated fully, but he appeared to be lying to everyone that watched it. The attention around the country is now  shifting to the ball boys that were on the sidelines says Haidar Barbouti. A former ball boy of the Chicago Bears has come forward and stated that the refs rarely checked the pressure of the footballs prior to the game according to He said they would simply feel the balls with their hands and then approve them and he said they never once had a ball rejected.

Sneaky Patriots

The New England Patriots have gained a reputation around the league as being sneaky and doing everything they can to gain an edge over their opponents, regardless as to whether it is legal to do so or not. It seems to be that the opinion that Bill Belichick and the New England Patriots possess is that they can do whatever they want as long as they don’t get caught. Now my buddy Sultan Alhokair is an expert when it comes to the NFL and thinks this would normally work and would keep a team from cheating, as most people would think after getting caught red handed secretly filming other teams’ practices. However, the Patriots seem to truly not care if they get caught and it is starting to become increasingly apparent why. They most likely deflated the balls in the AFC championship game to gain an unfair advantage over the Colts, but they are still going to the Super Bowl. The way that the rules stand, there really is nothing that can be done to them that is very severe. It doesn’t change their ability to win the Super Bowl next weekend. The only thing that can happen to them is less than a slap on the wrist, which they would gladly take at another shot at bringing a Super Bowl trophy back to New England. They may lose some draft picks in the following seasons and they may be fined, but they already have their team built and money isn’t that big of a concern to the organization.

Allenby Abduction Story Contradicted

When Robert Allenby missed the cut and did not finish at the Sony Open, he told an amazing tale. He was kidnappedand his phone and wallet were stolen. Someone beat him up and dumped him in a park. The story was so fantastical that you had to feel bad for him.

However, a witness has come along to say that Allenby was sloppy drunk outside the strip club where he said he got abducted. He fell to the ground, and a gentleman came over to help him. It took several minutes for this man to get Allenby to his feet, and then Allenby noticed that his phone and wallet were gone.

This means that he had hit his head on the pavement, and he lost his phone and wallet at some point. If this is the case, he just needs to tell the police what happened and let it go. It might be embarrassing that he got himself into this situation, but he was able to come back from it. Haidar Barbouti is glad he is not dead, and he will take a little bit of ribbing in the clubhouse. Otherwise, he needs to fess up and let thing go away before it gets out of hand.

Punishment is Nothing to New England

The New England Patriots have officially been caught cheating yet again. They were immersed in a scandal several years ago when they were caught taking film of other teams unbeknownst to them in an effort to get an unfair advantage in upcoming games. The blatant stretching of the rules that has been conducted by New England has started to get truly disgusting and the National Football League and the fans are starting to get very fed up with Bill Belichick, who is now being referred to as Bill Beli-cheat. This comes after the Patriots won a convincing game in the AFC championship last Sunday against the Indianapolis Colts and were subsequently brought under investigation due to deflated balls that the franchise had provided.

After an investigation it has been determined that eleven of the twelve balls the Patriots used in the game were deflated enough to give better grip to the balls and make them easier to catch, giving them a significant advantage in a cold game that was played outdoors in New England. The thing that is getting people like Gianfrancesco Genoso so angry is the fact that the Patriots don’t really get in trouble for their offenses. They are in the Super Bowl and nothing can change that. The only problems they face if caught is losing future draft picks and paying a fine, both of which will not make a difference to the Patriots if they win another Super Bowl.
